December 2027 will mark the 40th anniversary of my first trip to Thailand and my life-changing stay on a speck of an island in the Gulf of Thailand. My goal is to make a return trip to the island for the first time since 1987. Please join me as I share memories and photographs from Old Koh Tao while I embark on discovering New Koh Tao.

I stumbled upon this photo online several years ago. It was taken in 2002 in Chalok Ban Kao (the bay where I stayed). Back in 1987, of course, none of the buildings in this photograph existed. The photo beckoned me to return to see first-hand how the island has “grown up.”
Note: The red-roofed restaurant in the foreground, Taraporn Restaurant, bears the same name as the bungalow operation where I stayed, although the bungalows are long gone.
